Beyond Borders: Jobs, Skills & Mobility in Africa
Day 2: Nairobi
The session on jobs, skills, and mobility opened with a powerful reminder from Leanne Manas, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador:
“Borders may divide us, and they may divide land, but they should never divide humanity.”
This message set the tone for a dynamic conversation on labor mobility and employment for displaced individuals across Africa. Panelists emphasized that inclusion must move from policy to practice.

Brenda Mbathi, CEO of TRIFIC, called on the private sector to lead with bold action:
“We don’t just need to step up — we need to step forward, and do so with courage. Let’s take real action and deliver solutions. Even in places where no clear path exists, we can offer internships and create first-job pathways. With the AfCFTA in place, we should be strong advocates for the free movement of labour and opportunities.”
The urgency to shift from dialogue to delivery was echoed by Hannah Tsadik, who highlighted the need for mutual recognition of skills, qualifications, and certifications across African borders. According to her, this would allow displaced individuals to more quickly plug into job markets and contribute to economies — even through innovative channels.
The message was clear: inclusion is not just about welcoming — it’s about enabling, empowering, and moving forward together.
